Your Kid’s Headed to College. We’ve Got a Checklist.

Sending your child off to college? It’s emotional. It’s chaotic. It’s a lot of Target runs.

Whether you’re thrilled, teary-eyed, or both, this checklist will help you get them dorm-ready, money-smart, and academically prepped.

1. Talk Money First. Yes, Before the Cute Bedding.
Before you buy a single throw pillow, have the conversation.
  • Clarify who’s paying for what – tuition, rent, ramen, Uber rides. Don’t assume.
  • Build a budget together – include every latte and laundry load.
  • Review financial aid – what’s covered, what’s not, and when the money lands.
  • Start an emergency fund – even $500 in savings beats frantic 2 a.m. phone calls.

2. Give Them a Banking Bootcamp
This is your kid’s first real money moment. Let’s make sure they don’t blow it all in the first week.
  • Open a student checking account
  • Set up mobile banking and alerts
  • Talk credit cards, debit cards, and fraud
  • Teach the sacred rule: Check your balance before you swipe
3. Dorm Life: What to Pack (and What to Leave at Home)
College packing can go from “essentials” to “U-Haul” real quick. Here’s how to rein it in:

Must-haves:
  • Twin XL bedding, towels, shower stuff, first-aid kit
  • Storage bins, surge protector, flip-flops (yes, the floors are gross)
Don’t duplicate:
  • Coordinate with the roommate. No one needs two mini-fridges or five toasters.
Buy in waves:
  • Start with basics. Fill in the gaps after move-in. (Hint: Post-orientation sales are your friend.)

4. Academics: Prep Beyond the Syllabus
Textbooks matter. But so do habits:
  • Submit transcripts, vaccines, class schedules early
  • Rent or buy used textbooks—double-check ISBNs
  • Stock up on notebooks, chargers, pens, and maybe a snack stash

Encourage:
  • Weekly study blocks
  • Campus tutoring center (free. use it.)
  • Office hours – aka free brain time from professors

5. Let Go (But Keep Checking In)
Yes, this is their moment. But your support still matters.
  • Step back so they can step up
  • Stay connected, but not clingy
  • Celebrate wins – even if it’s just “I remembered to do laundry”
